Loved this podcast. Mary Joye is brilliant. Hope you have her back again!!!!

Is “I love you but…” the same as “I love you and…”?

I was interested in learning about these subjects in the context of family.

If you realize you’re dating or married to a narcissist you can leave. You can’t really leave your family, so how do you deal with these things inside a family?

B Arnold, You’re right, families are a bit different dynamic. This is really where strong boundaries come into play. If you struggle with boundaries, you just might need to evaluate whether or not you have some co-dependency tendencies. Mary was with us on episode 37 and 46 to discuss co-dependency and how to recover from it, as well as tips to set effective boundaries. With family, if they don’t respect your boundaries, sometimes it’s still necessary to walk away. Anybody who doesn’t respect your boundaries, does not deserve space in your life. Just because somebody is family, doesn’t give them free reign to cause you grief.

Hi B. If the "I love you and..." is followed by a negative comment than it can be. If it feels that way it probably is that way. You deal with them in your family by good insight and not arguing with the narcissist but having good boundaries and not tolerate their manipulation.

This was such a perfect podcast on narcissist. I really had no idea this is what Ive been going through for many years an recently very bad with a sister. Thank you for helping me realize its not all me. The last year has been a nightmare with her. We are both in our 60’s over a year ago I was visiting her in another state to have some fun after the long Covid year. For the first time in my life I told her she hurt my feelings and shes been verbally abusing me to everyone. She recently wrote me a horrible letter of hate I told her twice Ive moved on and she wont let it go. What Kind of therapist do you recommend I can get one on one therapy with.. i just don't know where to start …but this podcast has helped me allot- Thank you so much!

I am hoping that Mary sees this comment and can give you some guidance. If you belong to any local neighborhood FB groups, I often see people reaching out the community to ask them for personal recommendations for therapists in the area. They will start with, I am looking for a therapist that specializes in this ____, and I would prefer a (male/female), etc. Most of the time the community provides great recommendations and links. You might start there. But I suspect there is a professional website that could refer you locally to people who are trained in one particular area. I haven't looked into that so don't hold me to it, but I know most doctors, surgeons, dentists and even attorneys have similar systems.
Becoming aware, acknowledging that you have an issue at hand, and wanting to do something about it, are great first steps. I applaud you.
